Muskets

A musket is a muzzle-loaded long gun that appeared as a smoothbore weapon in the early 16th century, at first as a heavier variant of the arquebus, capable of penetrating plate armour. By the mid-16th century, this type of musket gradually disappeared as the use of heavy armour declined, but musket continued as the generic term for smoothbore long guns until the mid-19th century. Muskets were matchlocks until flintlocks were developed in the 17th century, and in the early 19th century flintlocks were replaced by percussion locks. Most muskets were muzzle-loaders. Early muskets were often handled by two persons and fired from a portable rest. Such a weapon was typically 5.5 feet (1.7 m) long and weighed about 20 pounds.

Musketeers used the matchlock musket, a firearm with a barrel up to 122 cm (48 in) in length at the start of the war and progressively shorter in design over time. The weapon was heavy and had to be supported with a V-topped pole, although this became unnecessary with new lighter designs later in the war.

Appearing for the first time in 1630, the flintlock musket introduced an improved ignition method to existing firearm mechanisms. Where previous models relied on a slow-burning match to ignite the gunpowder, the flintlock musket strikes a piece of flint, a derivative of quartz, against an iron pan. This made the gun more reliable in wet.

Muskets were considered too complicated, expensive, and ineffective. Because of this, bows, spears, and pikes remained in use until the early eighteenth century. English Colonel Sir John Smith summed up the opinion of many officers of the time when he wrote in 1591 that "the bow is a very simple weapon, firearms are very complicated things.
